Start from what transfers, not from interests

Interest lists produce jobs you cannot get. Skill inventories produce jobs you can. Write down what you actually do well — managing budgets, handling difficult customers, keeping complex work on schedule — and look for roles built on those.

The 70% rule

A viable move usually reuses about 70% of your existing capability and adds one new thing. If a route requires you to learn everything, it isn't a career change, it's a restart — and restarts are expensive.

Cost the gap before you commit

• How long until you could realistically be hired in the new route?
• What does the training cost, and is any of it funded?
• What income dip would you take, and for how many months?
• What is the smallest test that would tell you whether you'd enjoy it?

Test small before you decide

One small paid project, a few days of shadowing, or one honest conversation with someone doing the job will tell you more than months of research. It also gives you something concrete to put on an application.
